Lima was founded on January 18, 1535 by conqueror Francisco Pizarro. It was considered, for nearly three centuries, as the colonial Capital of South America. In 1821, it became a capital of the independent Peru; during the first decades of Republican life was the scene of political confrontations between various warlords. Although the origin of the name remains a mystery, there are many versions. Lima would come from "Limac – Limac" or "Limac - Huayta", name of a yellow flower which served to accelerate speech in children. ("Archaeology of Lima" - author: Pedro Villar Cordova). According to Garcilaso de la Vega, the Lima place name is a degeneration of the voice "Rimac", which in Spanish means "which speaks", about an Oracle very revered by Indians and, by extension, named the Valley and its river.
